Skydive Currency

Updated: Jul 13

So it’s true that some of the things we learn stay with us, and when we try to recall them, we often hear: “It’s like riding a bike! ”That may be true for some things, but in skydiving — not for everything.

Since this is a sport with a higher level of risk, our reactions must also stay sharp — both in our flying skills and in emergency procedures. And that’s something that, if not practiced at a certain frequency (which of course depends on our experience), can very easily be forgotten.

In Israel, we follow the USPA regulations,

so all the details can be found in the SIM, chapter 5.2:

Of course, the table refers to the minimum requirements, but the recommendation is to jump at a much higher frequency.

What happens if we lose our currency?

In that case, we need to contact the dropzone or an instructor/coach who can help us with a ground refresher and a currency jump.

The number of jumps and the amount of refresher training needed depends on the skydiver's experience and license level..

*Note:

  • A student who hasn’t yet completed their A-license must do a refresher with an AFF instructor.

  • Someone who already has an A-license or higher – technically, the license does not expire, but USPA membership might, so it’s important to check and renew in order to regain currency.*

Returning skydivers require thorough practical training in the following areas:

  • aircraft procedures

  • equipment

  • exit and freefall procedures

  • canopy control and landings

  • emergency procedures for aircraft, freefall, deployment, canopy-flight, and landing, as described in Chapter 4-1

Safety Days

One of the best tools to help maintain currency is participating in Safety Days, which are organized every year. It’s very important to refresh and talk about safety topics, as it's something not everyone routinely rehearses.

Wishing everyone safe jumps and blue skies!
